Up-to-date big books can be hard to come by. They are expensive and not a priority in many school's budget. So how can I implement big books in a classroom when I don't have the money to do so?
In our class, we make our own! My kids love reading big books. They are the "go to" book in our library. I am not sure if it is the fun size of the books, the fact that they made it themselves, that they KNOW how to read it, or that they are IN the book, that they love the most. But who wouldn't love to open up a giant sized book full of words that I know how to read and see pictures of myself there?
When we make big books, we start by looking at the sight words we know and what sentences we can build with them. In this book, we were focusing on "like" and "to." We were building sentences that said "I like to..."
I took the kids outside and took pictures of them doing their favorite playground activity. This was going to be the illustration for our nonfiction book. (Like how I added in some great vocabulary to my Kindergarten lesson?)
The next day, we took our pictures and glued them onto some big construction paper. Then we wrote the beginnings of our sentences.... I like to. My assistant and I went around and helped the kids to finish their sentences from there. Then I gave the kids a marker to trace over their words so that it would show up nicely. We laminated our pages and put them together with some book rings. Now we have a favorite big book that the kids LOVE to read!!
